Annual Dinner fit for a "Queen"

Can it be July ALREADY???  The months are slipping away and I've been in post for three months now.  It's been a hectic July - We had a wonderful speaker at our dinner meeting on the 6th July - my dear friend Jeanette Partridge who spoke from the heart about the heartbreak and highlights of looking after her son who was diagnosed at 19 with  schizophrenia.  It was very thought provoking and a wonderful testament to a mother's love.  We presented Jeanette with a cheque for £25 as a donation to MIND.

On Friday 9th July we celebrated our 72nd Annual dinner - in grand style with a visit by our very special guest Queen Elizabeth I AKA Lesley Smith, curator of Tutbury castle.  In front of the mayor of Rugby Cllr Don Williams, many distinguished guests from all over our region, she gave the most amazing performance as the ghost of QE I. The whole room was spellbound by the story of her father King Henry and his wives and her own facinating story of how she held the throne of England for over 45 years and brought peace and prosperity to England.  All told with great wit and humour.  We even got a peek under those voluminous skirts (weight of dress - 56 lbs!)  and learned more about Elizabethan underwear and hygiene than we'd bargained for!  At the end we all got to have our picture taken with her majesty as well. My own favourite was my son Kyle being presented to the "Queen" on bended knee!   Oh and I must say that the food was fabulous too - Louis and team at the Masonic rooms did us proud. Above is a picture of QEI and below is a video clip of the Queen in action.

After all that excitement we had a most marvellous day at the Tesco Community Fair on Sunday 11 July - Soroptimists from the club turned out to support the event to promote Soroptimism to the local community and distribute the datalink canisters to elderly and disabled people.  These small photo canisters can be loaded with information on medication and emergency contacts and stored in the fridge. If there is an emergency the ambulance or paramedics will be alerted to the whereabouts of the information with a sticker placed on the inside of the front door.  A very simple but effective idea that the club has been supporting for some years and this year the canisters have been sponsored by TESCO.

Elder Abuse Awareness Day - 15 June 2010

Following our programme action for this year around dignity in care, Soroptimists in Rugby are holding an Elder Abuse Awareness Day at the Age Concern Claremont centre on Clifton Road in Rugby.  We have invited pupils from Lawrence Sherrif school in Rugby to entertain the elderly guests  with their band while Soroptimists will be serving tea and home made cakes.
Elder Abuse is a very much forgotten or hidden in our society.  Latest reserch shows that about 9% of elderly people suffer abuse from people they know or who care for them.  This is an opportunity to voice our concern and opposition to the mistreatment of elderly people and come together to raise awareness of the issues.  Join us on the 15th or donate a cake to be served up on the occassion.

A FINE START!

My Soroptimist year started with a business meeting in our new format of two monthly meetings.  We previously had one meeting a month and then several smaller committee meetings plus an exec.  So a President was generally out at a meeting most weeks.  Our new format means we have a business meeting at 7.00 p.m followed by a business meeting at 7.30 with all members followed by committee meetings at 9.00.  Should keep thepace brisk and businesslike!

Last Saturday I dropped in on the stall at St Andrews where we were selling cakes, jams and bric-a-brac in aid of our sponsored girl in the Gambia - Aji.  We generally send a bag of rice to her every three months and the money raised goes to this good cause. A big thank you to everyone who gave their time and made cakes, jams and marmalade and donated items for the stall.  We were delighted to have raised £107 from our efforts!  The top photo shows  two of our members and the splendid array of goodies.  Also please note our lovely new bannerstand - we are proud to be Soroptimists and we can now tell the world!

As part of our Programme Action Soroptimists were also out in force as helpers at the Sport for the Disabled last Sunday.  This has become one of our yearly features and we are delighted to be able to support the community in this way.  Thanks to everyone who gave their time - I didn't manage to get there but I've heard that everyone had a fantastic time. Well done to everyone who helped.

My theme for this year is Inspiring Women with Action!  For my speaker and dinner meetings this year I have invited a number of women who are inspiring women of action.  My first speaker this week was Rachel Marshallsay who is an Admiral Nurse, one of only two in Warwickshire.  Admiral nurses who are trained mental health nurses support families where there is a diagnosis of dementia.  they work closely with the family offering advice and support right to the end-of-life.  Rachel read out a heart-warming letter from a former carer who had been a client of Admiral nurses and it was evident that the service which is provided is invaluable in getting through very difficult times.
John Suchet is the patron of Dementia UK who provide the Admiral Nurses (named after the gentleman with dementia  who left a legacy to start the service and who was a keen sailor) and he has just written a new book about his experience with his wife, Bonnie, who has Alzheimers.  Interestingly, Rachel reported that many men have come forward recognising that they need help as a carer following John Suchet's public declaration of his wife's dementia and highlighting the support he has had from his local Admiral Nurse.
Rachel and her team have recently received an award for their innovative work in the field of pallative dementia care and their work needs our support in the future.  Really pleased that we will be donating the proceeds from our concert recital in September to the Admiral Nurses.  We need more of Rachel and her colleagues in Warwickshire!

DAY ONE

My first day as President.  Feels weird as I've been a Soroptimist for nearly five years. I remember four and a half (!) presidents...I joined during Sherrie's year and seen four other presidents since...Nanette, Margaret, Jenny,  and Ishar.  I keep looking at my chains of office...are they REAL???

The AGM went well I thought even though I was poorly and very tired.  Hopefully my address and the short film on Dignity in Care gave fellow Soroptomists some food for thought.  I want this to be a memorable year where we achieve more than we ever thought possible!  Aim high I say and you'll fall somewhere near your target.

Our biggest challenge is recruitment of new members. It's going to have to be a team effort and I suggest that every contact with the world outside Soroptimism should be an opportunity to showcase what we do and how much fun we have.  If we are happy and united amongst ourselves other women will want to be in on this club and join us.

I loved the cards especially the one on the right above  which I have received wishing me good luck and thank everyone for their lovely kind thoughts. It was a great start yesterday and feel very much supported and encouraged.  The real work begins next week with our first business meeting!

On the Eve of the AGM

On Wednesday is our Soroptimist International Rugby 72nd AGM.  I am finally going to be taking the chains of office from our current president Ishar.  I cannot beleive how quickly this last year has passed - it scarcely seems yesterday when I thought "let's go for it!" and offered my services as Vice President.

All the hard work of planning this year is now done and I have only the diary to produce and see the year unfold!  When I started I thought I wouldn't have enough to do and not enough events and speakers.... however, quite the contrary because once I started there was no stopping and it then became a process of "what can I leave out? - I really want to do it all!".  And there's only a year!!!

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who encouraged me and guided me and gave me confidence and good advice.  It's of course a team effort and I know it's going to be a great year! Watch this space!
